(This might be long, so if you don't wanna read it all here is a summary : Six graders, with 2 weeks left of school, at a school I hate...are little PUNKS!)
I love subbing middle school. You can be sassy and funny and they understand it all. I especially like 6th graders, because they are still little and have the least attitude.
Against my better knowledge, I took a job assignment at this middle school I HATE. I subbed their a few times and EVERY SINGLE TIME Ive had a bad experience. Well, since the end of the year is approaching, I decided to take this job, especially since I had been requested for it. Let me remind you that I wasn't familiar with the administration or how they handle behavior (Referral, detention, ect.)I found out that the assignment is for 6th grade English. PERFECT. I love English...and I love 6th grade.
p.s. My little recap makes it sound not so bad, but trust me my friends, it was BAD!
Period 1: When the kids walk in and are loud and asking you questions ALREADY, you know its not a good start.
I take roll and things are starting off o.k. I give my little speech saying they can talk quietly only if they are doing their work. I give them 3 warnings, (it turns out to be WAY more than 3..I try and give them the benefit of the doubt) after 3, its got to be DEAD silent for the rest of the period. After that, I start writing their names down for their teachers (Which most kids hate!)
In the first 15 minutes they have already had 2 warning. Papers were flying, kids were out of their seats, two boys were pushing each other. I heard: "Mrs. B, hes poking me" or "Mrs. B, I don't have a pencil"
THANK GOD Period 1 would be over in 5 minutes. I can make it with 5 minutes.
FAIL. 1st and 2nd period is combined, so I'm stuck with the SAME kids!
Period 2: So they are supposed to continue to work. Their last warning was up so It had to be SILENT and those who talked got their names written down. They don't quiet down so I said "Who wants to be first on the list?!" and a
I survived periods 1 and 2 and PRAYED that period 3 and 4 would be MUCH better. They had to be, right? How could it get any worse?
Wrong. Those poor kids didn't know what I Just went through so I was already in a bad mood when they came in.
Period 3: "Hi Miss teacher BUMGAURAS." (blank stare from me) hi.
As I was trying to take roll, kids were laughing and talking. I had to stop and wait until they quieted down. Not a good start. I gave them the same speech I give the others and explained the assignment and told them to get going. Pencils were being thrown. One kid ripped another kids paper in half. One boy took another boy's backpack and wouldn't give it back, so they were tug of war-ing with it. Their 3 warnings were up and I started writing names down. The FIRST I wrote down, the kid saw it and said
Kid: "Come on. URGH I've had enough I'm outta here." and packs up his stuff and walks to the door.
Me: "Where are you going?"
Kid No response.
Me: Do you want me to call the office to let them know you're on your way?
Kid: "Let me thinking about it." (1 minute later ) No, I think I'll stay
Me: "Then sit down and get to work!"
The kid sits down and doesn't get anything out. I asked him again to take out his worksheet. He said "I don't work when I'm in trouble." :-/
Meanwhile, the other kids are talking, throwing stuff around.I honestly wanted to
VP: Who is giving you problems??
Me (In a kinda scared voice, I gave him the problem kids name and he took him away. Then gave them a stern talking. I could tell the kids were scared.)
Once he left, there was 10 minutes left in the period. The kids were so quiet, you could of heard a cricket. Once the bell rang, the kids left and it was lunch. I went to the office manager all shook up and upset. I kind of felt EMBARRASSED about the whole situation because I've NEVER had an experience like this before, and I can hold my own! Turns out, this kid has been in the office MANY times for problems, which made me feel a little better.
BLAH. I'm sure all my other substitute friends feel my pain. Like I said before, me venting it out is not even HALF as bad as it was in REAL life! Who know 6th graders could be SUCH PUNKS. seriously.
Needless to say, I am never returned to that school, at least not this year.
